Meet Teenage Fanclub
Scottish rockers Teenage Fanclub rose to fame in 1989 as unexpected stars of the alternative rock era. Their sound and perception have evolved over time, earning them a reputation as more pop-rock than grunge with a style that incorporates elements of ‘60s-’70’s-style folk rock and power pop. Teenage Fanclub’s breakthrough came in 1991 with the release of their second studio album Bandwagonesque, which spent 13 weeks on the Billboard Heetseekers chart and eventually peaked at the number one spot. The album marked the first time the band embraced a democratized approach to writing, with each of the three frontline members contributing songs – an approach that would become one of their trademarks for years to come. Following the album’s success, Teenage Fanclub joined grunge-rock’s Nirvana on tour, with Kurt Cobain famously referring to them as “the best band in the world.” In the years since, the group has released eight more studio albums. The current lineup includes founding members Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley, Francis MacDonald and Gerard Love (who will not play on tour) alongside keyboardist Dave McGowan who joined the group in 2004.
